RKC Free IVDD Seminar

Thursday 24th August 19.00 – 20.30

The Kennel Club’s health team is hosting a free webinar on intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), a common degenerative neurological condition in dogs, which can unfortunately lead to pain, nerve damage, and even paralysis.

IVDD is caused by a gradual deterioration of the shock absorbing parts of the spine, known as intervertebral discs. As dogs get older, these discs deteriorate and they harden (calcify), which results in diminished shock-absorbing capacity and can subsequently lead to a slipped disc and spinal cord compression. Although IVDD is a complex condition caused by a number of different genes as well as environmental and lifestyle factors, certain breeds experience disc deterioration at much younger ages and are unfortunately known to be predisposed to IVDD. Join our webinar to learn more about what research has told us to date including symptoms, possible treatment options, methods of reducing risk (including details of The Kennel Club IVDD Scheme for Dachshunds), and what future research could teach us.

The webinar will include a presentation from specialist Dr Paul Freeman, Principal Clinical Neurologist at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge. This presentation will also be followed by a question and answer session, giving attendees a chance to put forward their queries and experiences for discussion.

Clumber Spaniel Eye Testing Clinic 2023

Sunday 1st October from 10.00am at Bearley Village Hall
The Clumber Spaniel Club will be holding its annual Eye Testing clinic in conjunction with its Championship Show on Sunday 1st October. Testing will be carried out by Emma Hayton-Lee of the Eye Veterinary Clinic, Leominster and member of the BVA Eye Panel. A full list of the fees is set out on the booking form. This clinic is open to all breeds but in the event of a high number of bookings, Clumber Spaniels will be given priority.

The Club recommends that all Clumber Spaniels being bred from should hold a current eye certificate. It also recommends that all other dogs should be tested at regular intervals to monitor eye health; this is recommended to be at 2, 5 and 8 years of age.

The Club will subsidise the cost for all Clumber Spaniels tested on the day whether or not they are owned by a Club member and the fees on the booking form include the subsidy. By accepting this subsidy owners agree that the Club may publish the results on its website, and use those results to build evidence about eye health in the breed. The Club also offers free tests for Clumbers over 8 years old.
For those unable to attend this session the Clumber Spaniel Club will refund £10 for each dog tested and owned by an existing member and £5 for each dog tested and owned by a non-member. To claim this subsidy, owners must send a copy of the eye test certificate to the Breed Health Coordinator and must be willing for the Club to publish the results, and to use those results to build evidence about eye health in the breed.

Please note: Dogs must have a functioning micro-chip and the dog’s KC Registration Certificate must be presented at the time of the test for the vet to stamp to confirm the test has been carried out. Each dog will be allocated a specific time to arrive so that paperwork can be completed and drops can be administered approximately 20 minutes before the appointment for examination by the vet. The drops are designed to dilate the pupil to aid the examination of the back of the inner eye.

The venue is:
Bearley Village Hall, Snitterfield Road, Bearley, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 0SR
