LKA 2022 Clumber Spaniel Critiques

Please see the following

11th  December 2022                                      Peter Sheppard, Whissgig

I am grateful to the LKA committee for giving me my first judging appointment with CCs. I thoroughly enjoyed my appointment and I was generally pleased with the exhibits. Some of the movement was possibly not as sound as it could be, but having watched other breeds, I put that down to the slippery floor at the NEC. There were a number of exhibits who, shall I say, are carrying slightly more weight than they should. Eyes were generally satisfactory, some haw, but not excessive on some dogs and some very tight eyes on others. I was concerned that the dogs were getting large again, after a period where the size has been reducing, the ones I judged were acceptable, but I would not like to see any increase in size. Some of the bitches heads are less feminine than they could be, getting close to a male head at times. Ears were all nice and clean.

Minor Puppy Dog  (4, 1A)

  1. Maursett Mordecai at Rocabec
At just under 9 months, only just in Minor Puppy but full of confidence. Sound construction with a well proportioned head clean eyes and ears and a scissor bite. Reasonable depth of chest into well sprung ribs. The coupling was a proportionate length and the tail set correct. Legs were well muscled and the back legs had short hock and a good turn of stifle. The movement had reach and was straight and sound with the topline being held on the move. Coat was in good condition and adequate feathering for the age.  A work in progress but a well deserved first place, Best Dog Puppy and Best Puppy in Breed
  2. Suelynda Kith and Kin Among Jahanghir
At 7 months another well constructed dog, although slightly heavier built and longer in the body than #1. Nicely proportioned head, well defined stop. Regular scissor bite, clean eyes with slight haw. Good angulation front and rear with a good turn of stifle. Moved well holding the topline on the move.
  3. Tweedsmuir Skyfall at Heelstone

Puppy Dog (2)

  1. Suelynda Kith and Kin Among Jahanghir
  2. Vanitonia Rio Sonara to Bebecova
A solidly built dog with a correctly proportioned head, deep chest, well sprung ribs. Quite long in the loin, correct tailset. Well muscled legs but a lesser turn of stifle. The movement was not that smooth, but could well have been due to the LKA floor.

Junior Dog (1)

  1. Vanitonia Soloist
I have watched this dog as a puppy in the ring at LKA last year and having hands on now did not disappoint. Not only very well constructed, but very well prepared. Well proportioned throughout, a typical male head, limited haw in the eyes, scissor bite and clean ears. Long neck leading into powerful shoulders. Deep chest, well sprung ribs and a proportionate coupling. Well muscled legs that when moving showed he had reach and drive moving straight and keeping a level topline. A pleasure to watch. Dog CC and BoB.
I was told afterwards, this was the third CC, so subject to KC confirmation another Show Champion for the Vanitonia kennel.

Post Graduate Dog (1)

  1. Maursett Melwyn
Slightly nervous in the ring. A substantial dog with everything in proportion. Reasonable stop, clean eyes and ears. A long neck into a solid body with a deep chest and short coupling. Well muscled legs and good turn of stifle. On the move the topline was held well, but the tail was slightly high. Moved with reasonable drive.

Limit Dog (4)

  1. Anbrook Don’t Stop Me Now at Harrifield
A well constructed, solid dog that moved well.  A nice weight, head correctly proportioned and good expression. Clean eyes with slight haw, clean ears. Long neck into straight back, deep chest and good spring of ribs. Moderate coupling, tailset satisfactory. Legs well muscled, good turn of stifle and short hocks. Moved well showing reach and drive and held the topline on the move.
  2. Clumbus Jolly Jumper of Taranstigh
A dog that was also of good weight, but built slightly stockier than #1. A pleasing head with good expression, clean eyes and ears and a regular scissor bite. Chest not as deep but with good spring of ribs. Short coupling. Hocks slightly long but well muscled. Movement was satisfactory but did not show the same reach and drive as #1 which could, again, just be due to the surface.
  3. Nivalis Augustus
  4. Imp Prestij Nachii Mandarin Shik (Imp Rus)

Open Dog (1)

  1.  Sh Ch Maursett Mallachie at Molvonia
Well proportioned throughout, although the rib covering was more than possibly it should be . Lovely head, deep stop, great expression, clean eyes and ears, scissor bite. Deep chest, well sprung ribs. Sound shoulders with good angulation at the front and rear, short hocks good turn of stifle and well muscled. Moved straight with purpose and held the topline on the move. Unlucky to meet the Junior Dog today. RCC.

Minor Puppy Bitch (5, 2A)

  1. Maursett Marceline
A lovely girl, just under 9 months, full of life as she entered the ring, very confident and moved well with drive and reach and topline held on the move and a level tail. Her conformation was sound with a well proportioned head, chest has more development to do, but is to be expected at this age. Angulation was good and muscles developing well. Slightly long in the leg, but again, she’s got a lot of growing to do!
  2. Maursett Masikean
Litter sister to #1. Nice feminine head, clean eyes and ears, good breadth and front, well constructed with good muscle, but a little nervous which showed in her movement as it was not as sound as her litter sister.
  3. Maursett  Maree of Taranstigh

Puppy Bitch (2)

  1. Vanitonia Secret Episode
This bitch caught my eye as she entered the ring. A lovely feminine head, well proportioned, a super expression with a long neck leading into strong shoulders with good angulation front and rear. Chest still to develop, but good spring on ribs albeit with slightly too much covering! Moved freely around the ring showing good reach and drive for only just over 9 months. A well deserved Best Bitch Puppy and RCC.
  2. Winhampton Pandoras Box
A similar age to #1, but the movement was not as smooth, which may well have been due to the floor at LKA. Slightly less feminine head with a lesser stop, but a lovely expression. Well sprung ribs, but a short coupling, reasonable turn of stifle and well muscled. Good angulation, that unfortunately did not translate into a smooth movement on the day.

Junior Bitch (0)

Post Graduate Bitch (2)

  1. Maursett Mimi of Mariank
Another well proportioned bitch, a typical head with a deep stop, clean eyes and ears and a regular scissor bite. Good construction front and rear with a good turn of stifle, short hocks and well muscled. Occasionally she showed good movement with reach and drive as she was a little skittish around the ring!
  2. Big Boom’s Viking Liv Beskerby Imp HRV (Imp)
Longer in the loin than #1, typical feminine head, clean eyes good stop, scissor bite. Deep chest and well sprung ribs. Good turn of stifle, with good angulation front and rear. Tail set not as low as #1.

Limit Bitch (2, 1A)

  1. Tavirosh Sugar Plum Fairy
A solid bitch with a decent head, tight eyes, pronounced stop and broad on top. Deep chest, good spring of ribs and nice length of coupling. Angulation was good front and rear with a good turn of stifle that resulted in a smooth movement with reach and drive.

Open Bitch (3, 1A)

  1. Maursett Marnie

A typical feminine head, lovely expression, clean eyes and ears, deep stop, long neck leading into strong shoulders above a deep chest with well sprung ribs carried well back with good angulation front and rear. Low hocks and reasonable turn of stifle. Level topline that remained on the move and a low set tail carried correctly on the move. The movement was good showing good reach and drive. Bitch CC

2. Sh Ch Anbrook Fair Maid of Kent by Winhampton

Super feminine head and great expression. Nice broad skull and long neck. Deep chest and well sprung ribs. Longer in the loin than #1. Correct angulation, good bone, well muscled and well bent stifles. Correct tailset. Moved well.

Veteran Bitch (1)

  1. Winhampton Oops a Daisy
A well proportioned feminine head showing signs of being a veteran. A good stop with clean eyes and ears. A shortish neck into a well constructed front. Body shorter than some, but very well bent stifles, good muscle and bone. Her movement was slightly off today which could be due to the floor which seemed to a affect a number of exhibits. Nice to see the veterans still taking part.
